Who actually supplies your water
Sydney’s water involves two organisations, not one, and confusing them is the source of most of the misinformation you’ll read about it.
WaterNSW owns and protects the catchments and the dams. It manages the raw water before treatment and supplies it in bulk. Sydney Water takes that raw water, treats it at filtration plants, and distributes it through the network to your tap. When something changes in the taste of your water, it is almost always a Sydney Water treatment or network matter; when something changes in the catchment — algal blooms, bushfire runoff, dam levels — that’s WaterNSW territory.
Practically, this means your water quality report comes from Sydney Water and is specific to your supply system, while catchment conditions upstream are documented separately. Both publish, and they don’t always describe the same thing.
Where Sydney’s water comes from
More than 80% of Sydney’s drinking water comes from a single source: Warragamba Dam, treated at the Prospect water filtration plant. The remainder is drawn from catchments in the Shoalhaven, Upper Nepean, Woronora and Blue Mountains areas, feeding a system of eleven major dams.
Sydney Water operates around nine filtration plants in total — Prospect being by far the largest, alongside Orchard Hills, Macarthur, Illawarra, Woronora, Greaves Creek, Cascade, North Richmond and Warragamba. The distribution network runs to roughly 22,000 km of water mains, 257 reservoirs and 151 pumping stations.
There is one more source that only appears in dry years: the Kurnell desalination plant, which uses reverse osmosis to produce up to 250 megalitres a day — about 15% of Sydney’s needs — and pipes it 18 km to join the supply at Erskineville. It operates when dam levels fall below set thresholds, so the blend arriving at your tap is not identical year to year.
What that geology means for your water
The Warragamba catchment sits on ancient sandstone, and sandstone releases very little calcium and magnesium. The consequence is the single most useful fact about Sydney water: it is naturally soft, typically reported in the range of roughly 30–55 mg/L as CaCO3 depending on the source and reporting period.

Compare that to Adelaide, where Murray River water travels through limestone country and arrives substantially harder, or to outer Perth zones where groundwater pushes past 200 mg/L. Sydney sits at the soft end of the national range alongside Melbourne. If a supplier is recommending you a water softener in Sydney, that recommendation deserves a hard question.
The disinfectant question — and why it matters most
This is the parameter that actually determines whether a filter will do what you bought it for. Sydney Water uses chlorine for primary disinfection and adds ammonia to form chloramine as a longer-lasting residual through the network. Which one is present at your tap varies by zone and can change seasonally.
Standard activated carbon handles free chlorine well and chloramine poorly. A basic jug or benchtop carbon filter bought for “chlorine taste” may underperform badly on a chloraminated street — and this is the most common reason Sydney households conclude a filter “doesn’t work”. Catalytic carbon, or reverse osmosis, is the media that handles chloramine.
Because it varies by address, the only reliable answer is your own zone’s current data rather than a general statement about Sydney. Sydney Water publishes quarterly water quality reports by supply zone, searchable by address.
How to read their published data
Sydney Water conducts tens of thousands of tests annually against the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, covering turbidity, pH, disinfectant residual, microbial indicators and a wide range of chemical parameters. Three things are worth knowing when you open a report.
The figures are network averages or zone averages, not your tap. Utility testing stops at the network. Anything contributed by your own plumbing — older copper, lead solder in pre-1990s fittings, a long-stagnant line — will not appear in it. That’s not a criticism of the utility; it’s the boundary of what the data covers.
Compliance is against health-based guidelines. A supply can be fully compliant and still taste of chloramine or leave you unsatisfied, because taste and odour are aesthetic parameters. Compliance answers “is it safe”, not “do I like it”.
Sampling frequency varies by parameter. Disinfectant residual is monitored continuously in places; PFAS testing is periodic. A quarterly figure describes the quarter, not the day you read it.
What this means for filter choice
Working from the data rather than from marketing, Sydney’s profile points in a fairly clear direction.
Softeners and scale conditioners are hard to justify. At 30–55 mg/L, there is little scale to prevent. This is the one capital where scale-treatment marketing is least supportable.
Confirm your disinfectant before buying carbon. If your zone is chloraminated, you need catalytic carbon or RO — not a standard carbon block. Get this wrong and nothing else about the filter matters.
