There is no shortage of whole-home water filter suppliers in Australia. There is a severe shortage of honest information about them. Most "best water filter" articles online are affiliate-driven — they earn a commission on every sale and rank suppliers accordingly. This one doesn't. Every score on this page comes from our independent methodology, applied the same way to every supplier.
The rankings below cover the suppliers we believe represent the best options nationally, with specific notes on who each suits best. We've also included a full comparison table across all 23 suppliers we've reviewed, and a plain-English guide to choosing the right system for your home.
- ★AquaCo scores 9.1/10 — highest in FilterOut's independent assessment. NSF certified, no lock-in, transparent pricing.
- →The top 5: AquaCo 9.1 · Puretec 8.6 · Cloudtap 8.3 · Purasource 8.2 · Aquasana 8.1.
- ✗Lock-in warning applies to nearly half the market. A proprietary cartridge system costs $1,000–$3,000 more over 10 years than an open-format equivalent.
- →High FilterOut score = certified filtration + no lock-in + low 5-year running cost + strong after-sales. Not just brand recognition.

Our top picks for 2026
These are the suppliers that consistently perform well across the criteria that matter most to homeowners making a long-term purchase decision. We've noted the specific situations each is best suited to.
AquaCo is the highest-scoring supplier in our entire dataset and the gap between them and second place is meaningful. They hold NSF 42 and NSF 53 certification on their filter media — not just the housing — use standard Big Blue filter housings that accept third-party cartridges, and their 5-year cost of ownership is among the lowest we modelled. The combination of genuine certified performance with zero lock-in risk is genuinely rare in this market.
Puretec is the strongest nationally-distributed supplier in the east and the best choice for Victorian and NSW homeowners who want a supplier with genuine local presence. Their product range is the deepest of any supplier we reviewed, certification coverage is solid, and they have the most established service network outside of Perth. The slight trade-off is a higher annual cartridge cost than AquaCo.
Cloudtap offers the best value proposition for Perth homeowners who want genuine certification without paying the premium that AquaCo commands. They use standard-format housings, certification coverage is good, and their quoting process is among the most transparent of any Perth supplier. Service area is limited to WA, which is fine for most Perth buyers but rules them out for interstate homes.
Purasource is the standout choice for South Australian homeowners. Adelaide's water has a well-documented quality problem — high hardness and taste issues — and Purasource's systems are specifically configured for SA water chemistry. Certification coverage is solid and their after-sales support scored above average in our assessment. Not widely distributed outside SA and VIC.
CHF has by far the largest Google review base of any Perth supplier (2,400+) and genuinely impressive technical specs — 48 L/min flow rate is the highest in the market. We include them here because they're one of the most commonly purchased systems in WA. However, their proprietary 15" filter cartridge format is the most significant lock-in risk we've identified in this market. Once installed, you can only buy replacement filters from CHF. This is a material long-term risk that buyers must understand before signing.

How to choose the right system for your home
The best whole-home water filter isn't the same for every Australian household. The right choice depends on your water source, your local water chemistry, your household size and — critically — how you plan to handle filter replacements over the next decade.
Start with your water problem
Different systems target different problems. Before comparing suppliers, you need to know what's actually in your water. The most common issues by state:
The lock-in question is non-negotiable
The single most important question when comparing whole-home water filter suppliers is: can you buy replacement cartridges from anyone other than the installer?
Most systems use standard 10" or 20" Big Blue filter housings. Replacement cartridges for these are sold by dozens of suppliers online for $15–60 each. You are never dependent on your original installer.
A small number of suppliers use proprietary housings or cartridge formats. Once their system is installed, you are permanently dependent on them for replacements — at whatever price they choose to charge, on whatever schedule they set. This is not a minor footnote. Over a 10-year period, the cost difference between standard and proprietary cartridge formats can exceed $2,000.
What certifications actually matter
Australian suppliers frequently cite certifications in their marketing. Not all certifications are equal — and some are actively misleading.
- NSF 53 — the certification that matters most for health. Covers lead, VOCs, cysts and other contaminants. If a supplier can't confirm NSF 53 on their filter media, their health claims are unverified.
- NSF 42 — covers chlorine taste and odour reduction. Important for liveability but not a health certification.
- WaterMark — a plumbing compliance certification. Confirms the hardware won't leak or contaminate your pipes. Does not say anything about filtration performance.
- "ISO certified" — refers to manufacturing processes, not filtration outcomes. Do not confuse with NSF.
See our full certifications guide for a complete breakdown of what each certification covers and how to verify claims.
Whole-home filter vs under-sink RO — do you need both?
A whole-home filter treats all water entering your house. An under-sink reverse osmosis system treats a single drinking tap to a much higher purity standard. They serve different purposes and are not alternatives to each other.
For most Australian homes on mains water, a quality whole-home filter is sufficient for bathing, cooking and drinking. If you have specific concerns about TDS, fluoride, or PFAS at your drinking tap, adding an RO unit under the kitchen sink is a reasonable second step — but it shouldn't be the starting point.
Before you sign anything — 6 things to confirm
The bottom line
For most Australian homeowners, the best whole-home water filter comes from a supplier who can confirm NSF 53 certification on their filter media and uses standard filter housings. Those two criteria alone eliminate the majority of long-term risk.
Best overall nationally: AquaCo (9.1) for any homeowner who wants the highest confidence in certification and zero lock-in risk, particularly in WA.
Best for the east coast: Puretec (8.6) for Victorian and NSW buyers who want an established national supplier with genuine local presence.
Best value in Perth: Cloudtap (8.3) for Perth homeowners who want solid certification without the premium price.
Best for SA: Purasource (8.2) for Adelaide homeowners dealing with SA's notoriously difficult water.
